Understanding Microsoft Copilot

Unlike 365 Copilot for professional environments, Microsoft Copilot is designed as an AI assistant for personal productivity that is built into Windows 11 itself.
Overview
Microsoft Copilot is an evolution of the virtual assistant Cortana, which was originally offered at the operating system level. However, it focuses more on streamlining important PC functions than on informative questions.
Copilot is designed to save home users time on common tasks while personalising their Windows experience. It uses a voice-controlled user interface similar to Alexa or Siri. Copilot is called up via voice commands, typing or the built-in chat interface.
Main functions and possibilities:
- Optimise Windows settings and shortcuts – Copilot helps to adjust system preferences such as dark/light mode, font sizes, desktop backgrounds and more based on simple requests.
- Organise windows efficiently – Copilot can quickly snap windows into place with commands like ‘Place browser on left and explorer on right’. It integrates directly with the Snap Assist function.
- Create and manage screenshots – You can ask Copilot to create screenshots, crop images, add text annotations and save files. It uses the integrated Snipping Tool capabilities.
- Summarise web pages and answer questions – Copilot offers shortened previews of web pages from Bing searches. You can also ask questions in natural language, similar to the old Cortana features.
- Generate images and creations – Copilot uses the DALL-E model to create whimsical images and art based on text prompts and descriptions.
Availability
Microsoft Copilot is for all Windows 11 users. Accessing Copilot is simple: you can call it up via the taskbar, shortcut (Windows key + C) or via voice.
